Historical Society of Lawrence and its people 6 Essex Street This former office building has been the home of the Archives collections, research and office facilities since 1993. The building is one of five structures located in a courtyard surrounded by a brick wall. For over one hundred years, the Essex Company, founding corporation of Lawrence, conducted its business of planning and developing waterpower, factories, and streets from this compound. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is part of the North Canal Historic District. Immigrant City Archives has started to repair and restore these structures that are identified as among the most important in the city and form the gateway to Essex Street, downtown Lawrence. Immigrant City Archives, as a private, not for profit, charitable organization, welcomes donations of cash contributions and of historical material, all of which are tax-deductible. We also encourage anyone with an interest in history to participate as a volunteer in our activities. |
